General Surgery Fees

Consultation

First Consultation: $250
An initial consultation fee will usually apply.
Post-operative Care and Appointments: No Charge
All post-operative care until recovered will not attract any out-of-pocket fees or else will be bulk-billed.
Additional Consultations: $110

These include additional appointments in the series of care, such as when multiple investigations and discussions are required to manage a particular condition. Short appointments may be bulk-billed at the discretion of the surgeon.

Long Consultations: $350
Additional appointments that require extensive review of medical history, investigations and discussion to manage a particular condition, where the appointment exceeds 50 minutes duration, will be charged a Long Consultation fee.
Emergency After-hours Consultation: $400
For after-hours emergency consultations in rooms.

Procedures

The out-of-pocket fee listed applies to patients covered with private health insurance. Where a patient wishes to self-fund their private surgery, the fee will equate to the gap amount plus the fee paid out by a major health fund such as BUPA.
Uncomplicated Cholecystectomy (Gallbladder): No gap
Complicated gallbladder procedures where extensive adhesion division is required or bile duct exploration is anticipated, will attract a $500 known gap fee because of the additional complexity of the surgery
Simple Hernia: No gap or Known gap
A primary hernia that can be repaired using a relatively straightforward technique either open or laparoscopic will either attract no out-of-pocket fees or a $500 “known gap”, depending on the type of hernia and repair required.
Complex Hernia: POA
Recurrent hernias, large hernias containing incarcerated bowel, or that require repair using complex surgical techniques will attract out-of-pocket fees, determined by the complexity of the surgery. This will be determined after your consultation.
Laparoscopic rectus-diastasis repair: POA
A laparoscopic enhanced-view Totally Extraperitoneal (eTEP) Rives-Stoppa technique is used for this type of repair when associated with a hernia, or where the diastasis acts like a hernia. This is a technically difficult procedure that few surgeons are able to perform through keyhole surgery.
Anti-Reflux Surgery/Hiatus Hernia Repair: $500 known gap
Laparoscopic fundoplication +/- hiatus hernia repair. Revision fundoplication, re-do hiatus hernia repair and giant hiatus hernia will attract additional out-of-pocket fees due to the complexity of the surgery
Endoscopic Pilonidal Sinus Surgery: $500 known gap
If uninsured, a surgical fee of $1000 is payable.
Gastroscopy: No gap
Colonoscopy: No gap
Emergency Surgery After Hours: $500 known gap

This out-of-pocket fee includes the emergency after-hours consultation fee and call-out. Only insured patients will be eligible for emergency surgery in the private hospital. Non-insured patients requiring emergency surgery are best treated in a public hospital.
