Dr Jason Wong

Biography

Dr Jason Wong is the founder and lead surgeon at Brisbane General & Obesity Surgery. He is a specialist general, upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgeon with more than eight years of subspecialty experience in obesity and metabolic surgery, including complex and revisional bariatric surgery.

Dr Wong performs a broad range of procedures, including weight loss surgery, revisional bariatric surgery, benign oesophagogastric surgery, gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery, advanced and reduced-port laparoscopic surgery, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

He has a strong interest in metabolic health, long-term weight management, nutrition, psychology, fitness and overall wellbeing. This has shaped his progressive approach to care, with a focus on helping patients achieve meaningful, lasting improvements in health, confidence and quality of life.

Dr Wong completed his surgical training in New Zealand after his aptitude for surgery was recognised early in his medical career. He was accepted into the competitive surgical training program the following year and completed his training in 2014. During this time, he received awards including Best Registrar and was awarded a Lorenzo Capussotti Travelling Fellowship to present cancer research at an international conference in Vienna.

In 2015, Dr Wong undertook further subspecialist training in oesophagogastric and bariatric surgery at Auckland City Hospital. He moved to Australia in 2016, where he became the inaugural Oesophagogastric and Bariatric Surgery Fellow at Redcliffe Hospital.

Dr Wong is known for his friendly, approachable and caring manner. He takes a holistic approach to surgical care and is recognised for explaining complex medical and surgical concepts in a clear and practical way. His approach is modern, thoughtful and patient-centred.

As a surgeon, Dr Wong is meticulous and detail-focused, with a strong commitment to technical precision and continual improvement. These qualities reflect a lifelong pursuit of mastery, including his earlier achievements as a highly accomplished pianist.

He is a surgical thinker and innovator, and he has also pioneered several surgical techniques including:
